AEC (SAF OPEN HOUSE REFLECTION)

1. What were the objectives of the visit?

The objectives of this visit to to let Singaporeans (Public) know about National Service. There are a vibrant mix of static exhibits, dynamic performances, battle rides, and other interactive games and activities that will keep us entertained for hours. We get to learn what they do and find out more about NS. It also tells Singaporeans to stay vigilant in undesirable situations. They teach us what to do during an emergency. They told us the basic knowledge of the skills acquired in NS.

2. What were some significant observations during the trip?

When I was at the SAF open house, I was allowed to walk around and go to booths. One observations I made is the SAF Tanks vehicles are really big. It is actually not that easy to climb into one truck. I have to be extra careful when climbing in because the steps to the vehicle are really high.

I really take my hat off to those NS men. It was raining heavily. Yet, they could not take a break and go into a sheltered area. They have to stand in the rain and carry out the duties.

SAF uses a lot of technology to assist them in their daily life as well as their mision. For instance, when there is a suspicious item laying area, they would use a robot to check if the item is dangerous. I find it really cool because when they use such technology, humans are not required to be examined it themselves, causing their lives to be in danger.

3. What did I enjoy most about the visit?

What i enjoyed the most is actually the SAF showcase. It was really cool. The showcase started with huge army tanks ramming a white car. I find it really cool because I only seen it happen in GTA (A game). I have never seen a vehicle ramming another vehicle. Furthermore, the tank tore the car into many shattered pieces.
There were also army tanks that has machine guns and weapons that shoots. It showed me how they deal with deal traffickers, bomb explosion and terrorists attacks. Hence , i really enjoyed the SAF showcase.

4. Were the objectives fulfilled?

Yes, I get to know a lot of information and had real life experience as well.  Usually, I would learn about SAF only through news, unless the topic is being brought up by my teacher. Thus, when I was over there, I went to exhibitions and see how tanks operate. The NS guy briefly told us how it worked and what is the purpose of its function. For example, there is this tank that can only be operated by using the camera. The camera inside the tank could turn 360 degree so the outside could not see whats going on in the inside of the truck. However, the inside could clearly see the enemies from outside.

5. After this visit, what do you see as your role as an individual to the community?

I will stay vigilant and do not panic. When there is any situation that occurs, i will tell the rest of the people what to do. I felt that I could not do as much as I am not a guy so I will not serve NS. but of course , I would still try to contribute to the community whenever i could. Hence, I think i will contribute to the community in another aspect.  For example, I can volunteer myself and help out in event. I can bring across Singapore deterrence and diplomacy message to let more people know. In a way, that is also a contributions., just that its not a direct contribution. It would be more of a indirect contributions to the society.

6. Is there a change in your attitude towards the role of national defense before and after the visit?

Yes, there is a change.
At first, I used to think that National defense is useless and not important because I felt that Singapore has always been safe. furthermore, it is an country/island that is surrounded by neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia.
However, after this visit, I realize that I took Singapore safety and peace for granted. I realise that NS men did a lot to ensure that crime are criminalize and keeping our country safe.

8. Would I recommend anyone to visit this Open house? Who?

I will recommend students and family to visit. It is really fun and it is entertaining as there are many fun activities that could be done. Student can get to broaden their horizon by visiting the open house. This is because they will probably see army tanks showcase that are usually not shown in public. It is also good for guys to go these showcase before they get enlisted in NS. this is because they will get to know the basics for what is going to happen when they join NS. furthermore, after they visit the Open house, If they have any questions to ask, they could approach any NS men that is helping out. They were kind and helpful.

Overall, it was a good experience for me.
Just one unfortunate thing that happen is, it keep raining when we were at the open house.
