AEC ( Citizenry/Marginalised group)
Citizenry:
Singaporeans with rights (working privileges, social privileges, voting privileges, healthcare/insurance and etc.)I think the biggest problem between different races is the language. Sometimes, under some circumstances, intentionally or not, we will unconsiously speak in our mother tougue language, leaving the other races outcasted. They would feel discriminated and upset. Hence, I feel that we should compromise and try to accept the differences between one another.
There's one point where my classmates said that the minorities should speak up for themselves, if they felt that they are discriminated.
I dont really agree. It is easier to say than to be done.
In Primary School, I was very tanned (brown skin tone). A lot of chinese thought I was malay and did not want to interact with me. Since I could not make any chinese friends, I tried to make friends with the malay. The malay did make friends with me. However, they often left me out. They would speak in their mother tougue language which I could not understand. They did not bother to explain what was going on.
Hence, I felt really unfair and upset. But I could not bring myself to say anything as I do not have any friends. However, they have more people on their side. I did not belong anywhere.
Thus, I actually understand what minority feels when they get discriminated/outcast.
My teacher showed us a video on an elderly who had Alzheimer's disease which is a type of dementia.
Even though, she forgot everything. She did not forget her grandchild. She was anxious so she loved her grandchild alot.
When I watched the clip, I was overwelmed with emotions.
In singapore, there are many elderly who are ill. They once contributed so much to the country. It is our responsibility to take care of the aging population. The government and community have a lot of schemes to help them. However, we should also do our part. We can volunteer ourselves and spent more time with these elderly.
My teacher also showed us a video on foriegn workers getting injured and was not able to work.
Reality is harsh. Government can only spent their resources and money on Singaporeans. Foriegns do not have healthcare benefits, so the guy who got injured could not paid for his medical bills.
He mentioned that he could not see, he could not do things that he usually would do. He said he could only cry.
I understand how he felt. This is because he could not work, could not take care of his family. Furthermore, his family members are back in his hometown.
There's a saying that it is better off dead than to be sick. Hence, when I watch the video, I could really felt his pain.
Our national pledge says "
Regardless of race, language or religion, to build a democratic society, based on justice and equality "
But how many of us really can regard ourselves as equal?
In this society, everyone has at least once felt discriminated or is the discriminating others. People often see themselves more superior than others. Hence, there will always be unfair treatments.
